Tips on Coin Collecting

As an art, coin collecting dates back to the 14th century. It was then practiced by the rich and famous, mostly as a hobby. Nowadays collecting coins has become a hobby that anyone interested can afford. Valuable coins have been collected through the years. Minimum skill is required and it is fun getting to know coins from different parts of the world.

Youngsters start collecting coins for fun. They normally do not have a specific goal and might start by colleting coins from different countries or times. As the young collector becomes more inquisitive, he will start noticing smaller details and in doing so the value of his hobby will increase. At this point the collector will not buy coins for his collection, but will merely do it for fun.

At a later stage the youngster will start realizing the value of the collection and will then go for more specific coins. Certain collectors will only go for coins that have historic value, for example: coins dating back to World War One, coins that were minted during independence or ones that were minted in the year a great leader has died.

It can be beneficial if the collector starts concentrating on a time period instead of a certain type of coin. Another very important factor to keep in mind is to try and complete the collection. A good start is to subscribe to some magazines where information on various coins can be found. It can take a good deal of time to build and complete a collection but the challenge is always rewarding. Remember to always catalog the coins as it make it so much easier to keep track of.

With enough time and patience quite a lot can be learned through the mere study of coins from different parts of the world. There are many coin collecting individuals, who instead of collecting the rare coins, will rather go for coins that are still in circulation. It is fascinating to be able to learn about the history of a nation by studying that country’s coins.

The release of ERIC II follows five years of intensive work in going well beyond the scope of the first edition. Where 2005′s ERIC provided a solid introduction into the field of Roman coinage this followup aims for a much higher ambition with a fully comprehensive catalog of even the most obscure issues while maintaining the user-friendly format of the original. Also retained and significantly enhanced is the use of high-resolution color photography from cover to cover. The plates for each ruler have been upgraded with better and more photos with the rest of each section making rich use of color elsewhere. The listings are now more informative and are internally referenced with pertinent ancillary data. A significant improvement has been made in extending the catalog over the entire Byzantine series thus covering the complete span of coinage from the days of Augustus through the downfall of Constantine XI some 1,500 years later. Numbering some 60,000 entries, this landmark work marks the first occasion such a wide swath of numismatics has been covered in a single volume.

From Library Journal:

Although twice the page count of the 2005 edition, ERIC II is not just an extension of its predecessor. It is a fundamental revision and scope expansion, including 60,000 entries that incorporate essential numismatic esoterica. The foremost subject resource since H. Cohen’s eight-volume Description historique des monnaies frappes sous l’Empire Romain of 1880-1892, ERIC II covers the 1500-year period between Augustus and the 1453 fall of Constantinople. Opening with an informative introduction that explains denominations and mint marks, Suarez (ERIC I) divides his subject into 15 chronologically organized chapters, surveying the ruling culture and detailing each imperial coin’s minted permutations. An absolutely vital guide for numismatists.

Information on a Coin Counter

There are lots of people and businesses that always find great use in a coin counter, even if they need it only a few times a week, it is a big help. Many businesses like pubs, bars, and restaurants that are open for longer than eight or nine hours a day like to use these coin counters so when it is late at night they do not have to stand for ages counting coins as this could be rather dangerous. Most banks also have coin counters, as well as the note counters. This saves them a lot of time and makes their job easier at the best of times.

There are many different kinds of coin counters available on the market today, but you will choose which one you want according to the reason you want it. For example, if it is for a bar, pub, restaurant or bank then you would want one that is big, fast, and extremely accurate. Most counters are accurate, but take one that has a good name that people know about. If it is just for your office or the business you are running from home, then you might want to go for something a little less expensive and bulky, but rather small, efficient and accurate.

A great coin counter for big businesses is the Manual Electric with a Steel Case. This counter is very compact which makes it easily portable and doesn’t take up much space when setup. You can choose how to operate it, manual or electric; it has six auto stops and is just what you are looking for. If it is just for a small or home business, you could even use a counting tray. These are not as fancy as the real counters but they are a whole lot cheaper and if you are only running something small, a tray is all you need.

Crimping Coin Wrappers For Easier Wrapping

Most banks require large coin deposits to be made with wrapped coins or for the customer to pay the teller to wrap the coins. With so many coin wrappers on the market though, wrapping coins can be an enjoyable family experience while saving money at the banking institution. Life experiences and lessons can even be shared during this time.

Wrapping coins used to be a complete hassle because one had to balance the coins in the wrapper while manually folding the ends of the wrapper closed. While there are still wrappers on the market that work this way, it is no longer as common as it used to be. Now there are wrappers that can be rolled and form a very tight seal to lock in the coins. This is the kind of wrappers the banks use and is now available to the public.

For the crimped bank style wrappers, there is the additional need for the crimper. This hand held device is easy to use and very effective at providing a solid seal. This hand held device does require some getting used to, so several practice runs should be done before attempting to roll and crimp many rolls of coins. Once the process has been learned, it is very possible to crimp the rolled coins while holding a conversation with one’s partner in coin rolling.

All coin wrappers come with explicit notations as to what coins are to go into the wrapper and how much money each roll should contain. Many of the wrappers are even color coded to avoid confusion, although one would be hard pressed to put pennies in the dime roll.

Since rolling coins can be very tedious and boring alone, it is a perfect time to spend talking and getting to know someone else. This is also a great time to spend talking to one’s children or spouse. As times make it harder for one to hold conversations, it is not unusual for people to do two things at once, talk and work at the same time. Coin rolling can be the same way, and with easy to used crimp coin wrappers, this can be done without interrupting the conversation. This is an excellent time to learn more about a person or explain why saving coins are a good practice to one’s children.
