The Titanic is one of the most well known shipwrecks in history. Ironically this ship was said to be unsinkable but after hitting an iceberg it did just that. It was full of travelers who were excited to be out on the open ocean. There were men, women, and children who lost their lives in this disaster. There weren’t enough lifeboats for everyone on board and what was available was offered to women and children.
On April 15, 1942 more than 1,500 passengers of the 2,240 on the Titanic lost their lives. The ship started to sink in the late night hours of April 14th but the Memorial Day for this tragic situation is always taking place on April 15th. There have been numerous stories since that time about the lives lost on the Titanic. There have also been wonderful stories of those that were able to survive.
There are some rumors about the people on the Titanic that aren’t true. It is often said that they were all very rich and high class individuals. Since this was the maiden voyage of the Titanic they were invited at a very steep price to be a part of it. Yet this was only a small percentage of those on board. Some of them were well known in the movie industry as well as those that owned the ship line.
There were many migrants on the Titanic as well that were in the process of coming to America. They were looking for a way to start a better life and they felt this voyage was the ticket to being able to do so. They had no idea that this would likely be the last travel they would ever make.
More than 600 of the second class passengers on the Titanic where to have been on another ship. However they had to change due to problems with getting enough coal to man the ships at that time.
In 1985 the remains of the Titanic were discovered. With the advances in technology they were able to go down and explore parts of it. Yet it can’t be fully recovered and it is believed what is left of it will end up being at the very bottom of the ocean in the future. Then it won’t be able to be reached at all. A huge celebration is planned for the 100th year anniversary in 2012.

The waters off the Spanish coast have been used for centuries to transport people and goods. Not all of those ships made it to their destination though as they ended up with some type of problems. There are thousands of Spanish shipwrecks that have been recorded over this period of time.
Many of these early Spanish shipwrecks held a large amount of gold on them. They also had other valuable materials that were to be imported or exported. Pirates and treasure hunters have long attempted to reach the depths of the waters in order to get to the goods that were on them. It is believed that there is still a great deal of materials to be found on these early Spanish shipwrecks.
The San Pedro was a merchant ship that sank in 1596 around the area of the Bermuda triangle. Some of the most valuable jewelry in the world was found to be in the wreckage of that particular ship. In the early 1700’s there were many Spanish shipwrecks that were the result of the weather on the waters. Hurricanes seemed to be in full force that year and the ships were just no match for the fury of nature.
One of the most famous of all Spanish shipwrecks is of the Santa Maria which was one of the three ships that Christopher Columbus took with him to the New World. While she didn’t have much in the way of treasure on her at the time, the historical value of this Spanish shipwreck is very important.
One of the many results of such shipwrecks though is that the Spanish were able to build larger and much stronger vessels. They started using durable materials that weren’t as easy to break up as wood. They also used various forms of navigation to help them avoid rocks and other ships.
Still, there is believed to be millions worth of gold and silver coins from Spanish shipwrecks that haven’t been found yet. Even with various forms of technology it is more difficult to get to these remains than you might think. Many are believed to be under layers of sediment at the bottom of the ocean as well.
Ships of all sizes and carrying various types of people and materials have been found to not survive their trips. Some can go for years and years before they fall victim to the sea. Others such as the Titanic are only out there for one voyage before their ill fate is sealed to be forever a part of the ocean. The three main causes of shipwrecks include hitting rocks, poor structure, and the weather.
Even though the ships can’t be saved in these instances there are more efforts today than ever to save those on them. There are life boats to help each of the people on board to safety. There are also emergency services in place that help to get these men and women to a safe place. Yet not all of them have been saved and so many have forever become a part of the ocean as well.
There are an estimated three million ships that lay on the bottom of the ocean. We have only begun to be able to explore many of them. It takes a great deal of money and technology to be able to reach them. Many of them are guarded by the owners of them even though they are in waters owned by everyone. This means you can’t just go out there and explore any of the shipwrecks that you are interested in.
Still there are plenty of reports of looting from various shipwrecks. Professional divers take a team and go to the depths of the ocean. They look for old jewelry and other materials that are sure to be worth a great deal of money. Many of these artifacts are found on the bed of the ocean floor. It is very difficult for any person or their equipment to reach to such depths though and find them.
Manufacturers of shipwrecks tend to be held liable for not following safety precautions. This can include lawsuits for money for the families of those involved in the incident, fines, and even jail time if lives are lost. This is all done in the hopes that manufactures of ships aren’t cutting corners in the production of the equipment in order to save some money in the process.
